Review on The White Onion
Husband and wife team Sarah and Eric Guignard took over the premises formerly occupied by the Lawn Bistro with the opening of The White Onion on 15th May 2015, located in affluent Wimbledon Village. The building has undergone a chic refurbishment and now sports a smart décor with polished wood tables, an eclectic mix of pictures adorning the blue panelled walls and light streaming in from the overhead glass atrium.
Eric Guinard will continue to cook at his critically acclaimed restaurant the French Table in Surbiton and has appointed Frédéric Duval as Head Chef, who has worked alongside him for the last eight years. Together they oversee a menu of modern French and Mediterranean culinary delights with a focus on first-class seasonal produce.
Amongst the starters look for cannelloni of fresh Dorset crab with julienne of vegetables, lime leaf and crab sauce or meat fans might opt for the terrine of rabbit and ham hock with green olives and foie gras with home-made piccalilli and toasted walnut bread. When it comes to main courses there's roast wild bass with olive oil mash Swiss chard, Jerusalem artichoke chips and herb cream or assiette of Herdwick lamb with almond and roquette crust, tartelette of artichoke brûlée, fresh peas and rosemary sauce. Proceedings close with desserts in the shape of lime and yoghurt cake paired with crème fraîche and mint or a passion fruit tart with white chocolate and ginger ice-cream.
To accompany the menu there's a carefully chosen wine list of some 150 references together with a selection of cocktails.
