Review on Hotel du Vin & Bistro
The latest Hotel du Vin & Bistro opened in June 2015, set in Cannizaro House an opulent Georgian mansion it has undergone a £1 million pound refurbishment. Surrounded by 34 glorious acres, just minutes away from the All England Lawn Tennis Club in Wimbledon, the building takes its title from the one-time resident the Sicilian Duke of Cannizaro. Steeped in history dating back to the early 19th century it has played host to such notable figures as Lord Tennyson, Oscar Wilde and the last Maharajah of Punjab. The new interiors by Stephanie Briggs of Curious Worldwide have created an elegant and glamorous décor, whilst being sympathetic to the original features.
The kitchen turns out classic dishes alongside a modern repertoire making admirable use of first-class locally sourced seasonal ingredients. So expect snails in garlic and herb butter or maybe choose the charcuterie plate which offers a selection of homemade terrine, cured meats, pickles and Dijon mustard. When it comes to main courses there's succulent steaks cooked on the Josper grill served with frites and your choice of sauce or for fish lovers there's mussels steamed with white wine, cream, shallots and garlic. To close the show enjoy desserts such as peach melba sundae, fresh peaches, Scottish raspberries, crisp meringue bound in crème Chantilly, with raspberry sorbet, peach and vanilla ice creams or tarte au citron paired with raspberry sorbet.
The Orangerie overlooking Cannizaro park is available for drinks or an Al Fresco menu serving lighter options of bistro classics.
