Review on Céleste Restaurant at The Lanesborough
Ideally located in Knightsbridge overlooking Hyde Park, the iconic Lanesborough, a world-class hotel occupying the shell of the old St George's Hotel, reopened in July 2015 after a multi-million pound refurbishment. In the wake of the lavish make-over Heinz Beck's Apsley's has transformed itself into the Céleste Restaurant with a stunning décor created by the renowned French interior design studio Alberto Pinto. A beautifully Venetian-styled dining room with fluted columns, illuminated by a domed glass roof during the day and in the evening by the magnificent glittering English crystal chandeliers. Reflecting it's Regency heritage, 250 mouldings were employed to create the historic scene in the bas-relief that surrounds the frise under the glass roof. Tables are crisply laid with white linen, set against a mix of gold and turquoise chairs and luxuriant sofas, ensuring a suitable cosseted setting for leisurely meals.
The kitchen produces elegant French cuisine with international influences, showcasing innovative and modern techniques using British produce from carefully sourced suppliers. The restaurant was a proud recipient of a Michelin star in the 2017 edition of the Guide. Open your account with langoustine ravioli, fresh herbs, claw velouté, and Espelette pepper or Girolles mushrooms sautéed with thyme and confit garlic, crispy pork belly on a persillade crust. Moving on there's Norfolk black leg chicken, roasted breast, crayfish, baby spinach and mushroom 'duxelle' or from the sea choose, wild sea bass baked in a salt and seaweed crust, shellfish and violet artichoke couscous. To conclude there are fabulous desserts from Nicolas Rouzard with a signature dish of Caribbean Guanaja chocolate, caramelised cashew nuts praline, chocolate mousse and coffee ice cream or white and yellow peach, verbena, redcurrant, ginger cold consommé, sorbet and fresh almonds.
Céleste is also the setting for afternoon tea, which is an occasion not to be missed in the grandeur of this classical room.
