Review on Ham Yard Bar & Restaurant
Ham Yard Hotel is the eighth property in London to be opened by Tim and Kit Kemp, owners of the Firmdale group. Located in Soho, just a short walk from Piccadilly Circus tube, the 91-room venue has an urban village vibe, with the hotel set around a tree-filled garden showcasing a specially commissioned contemporary bronze sculpture by British born artist, Tony Cragg. The hotel has a ground floor restaurant and lovely outdoor terrace when the weather is warm, as well as a 175-seat cinema, a 50's style bowling alley and a Mediterranean rooftop garden bar.
The light and airy Ham Yard Restaurant has been designed by Kit Kemp, a colourful space with sumptuous upholstered banquettes and walls lined with fabric from her own collection with Christopher Farr, and decorated with ethnic artwork.
The restaurant offers a frequently changing seasonal menu with dishes in the shape of Dorset crab, poached duck egg and watercress or lamb sweetbreads, parsley purée and poached garlic mayonnaise. Main course choices include stone bass, citrus tomato sauce, shaved fennel, fregola and Beal's Farm chorizo or from the land there's braised shoulder of lamb, olives, broad beans and feta. To close the show desserts take in Ham Yard peanut butter and raspberry sundae cone or vanilla brûlée poached rhubarb, ginger biscuit, white chocolate soil. Informal dining takes place in the bar where guests can enjoy a selection of small plates including barbequed octopus with pickled white cabbage, lime, chilli and mint or truffled mascarpone and ham melts.
