Review on Berber & Q
Berber & Q is a Middle Eastern grill restaurant located in an Haggerston railway arch in Hackney, East London. Founded by Chef John Katz and Mattia Bianchi who looks after front of house, they previously honed their skills in critically acclaimed restaurants such as Galvin Bistrot de Luxe and Zest, as well as working with respected chefs Yotam Ottolenghi and Ben Spalding. Running the length of the exposed brick walled room is the bar, with an open-to-view kitchen showcasing the charcoal-fired mangal on which the food is cooked. Tables are made from reclaimed railway sleepers with bench style seating, as well as banquette seating set with vibrant red cushions on the opposite wall.
The kitchen is devoted to sourcing produce from an impeccable network of trusted suppliers and the results are endlessly tempting, featuring dishes full of exciting flavours. Witness, smoked pork belly, pomegranate molasses BBQ sauce or smoked short-rib and date syrup glaze served on a tray with cumin salt, house sauces and grilled pita. Otherwise you could opt for a few of their mezze dishes, ideal for sharing, such as such as blackened aubergine, crushed tomato, garlic yoghurt or smoked beans, lamb neck, and crisp onion. For a sweet-toothed finish you can choose the rose malabi or chocolate and cardamom mousse.
Backing up the food is a carefully crafted wine list featuring some lesser known Turkish offerings, a few orange wines, as well as signature cocktails.
A second venue called Berber & Q Shawarma Bar opened in the middle of Exmouth Market in July 2016, telephone 020 7837 1726 for reservations.
