Review on Benedicts
Benedicts formerly known as St Benedict's Restaurant owned by Jayne and Nigel Raffles is a long-serving fixture of the Norwich dining scene, set on a pretty street a few minutes walk from the Norwich Theatre Royal. It was taken over in the summer of 2015 by former Michelin-starred head chef of Morston Hall for seven years, Richard Bainbridge. Featuring a light and airy dining room with large windows, the restaurant has a cool interiors with banquette seating set against wooden tables.
Well known for his appearances on BBC Two's Great British Menu, Richard is passionate about drawing out the very best from the local larder, and first-class ingredients are judiciously employed with telling effect. A popular choice on the concise menu is sucking pig, it's own broth, broad beans, scorched baby gem and quark or fish fans might opt for the Norfolk mussels, Morston samphire, spelt scraps, potato and chervil. Follow on with eight week hung Blickling Hall Aberdeen Angus, truffle, potato and Madeira jus or Sheringham Caught Wild Sea Bass or Grey Mullet, new season turnip, yoghurt, lemon, Jersey Royals and passion fruit. Bringing up the rear are cleverly fashioned desserts such as hay baked panna cotta, Sharrington raspberries, elderflower and dill or duck egg custard tart, rhubarb, and sorrel sorbet.
A carefully thought out wine list, friendly service and a relaxed ambience, together with a skilfully crafted menu has made Benedicts a very popular dining venue in Norwich.
