Review on John's House Restaurant
Chef Patron, John Duffin is the holder of Leicestershire's first Michelin star, quite an achievement as his aptly named John's House Restaurant has only been opened nine months. Set in the rural village of Mountsorrel, well known for its granite quarry, the largest in Europe, the restaurant can be found on his family's farm, a popular tourist attraction where you can meet the animals, visit a motor museum and buy produce from the farm shop. Laid out over two floors in a converted 17th century farmhouse, there's a cosy lounge with a roaring fire downstairs where you can peruse the menu and enjoy pre-dinner aperitifs. The dining room is upstairs in two intimate rooms featuring exposed brick walls and tables laid with crisp linen and candle lights.
John certainly has a vast amount of experience to bring to the table, his pedigree spans some of the UK's most celebrated restaurants including Rhodes W1, Hibiscus in Mayfair, The Berkeley under Marcus Wareing, Texture with Agnar Sverrisson, as well as Simon Rogan's pop-up restaurant Roganic.
The focus is squarely on high quality ingredients and seasonality with most of the vegetables, pork, lamb and beef supplied by the family farm which is run by his brother. The menu offers a concise selection of sharp, up-to-the-minute dishes that might include raw Devonshire scallop, oyster cream, horseradish and wild fennel or salt baked and pickled beetroot, ox tongue, dill and crème fraiche. When it comes to main courses there's Stonehurst hogget cooked in toasted hay, artichokes, black cabbage and ewes cheese or fish fans might opt for the poached fillet of halibut, sweetcorn, charred cabbage and brown shrimps. Later, turn your attention to desserts like warm chocolate cake, chocolate sorbet, orange cream and coffee or peaches poached in mead, honeycomb parfait and anise.
The wine list brings together some great wines from around the globe and service is attentive and courteous.
