Review on Bernardi's
Bernardi's is a smart new arrival occupying a lovely corner spot between Seymour Street and Seymour Place in exclusive Portman village, just a short walk from the hustle and bustle of Oxford Street. The Italian restaurant has been launched by Australian-raised Italian brothers, Gabriel and Marcello Bernardi who founded the Cubitt House pub and restaurant group, which operates four London venues including The Orange and The Alfred Tennyson.
Spanning two floors of a restored Victorian property, the light and airy interiors have been kitted out in neutral colours, leather banquette seating is set by the windows and there's a large communal table to the rear of the restaurant, overlooked by the open kitchen and sleek bar. Downstairs there's a relaxing cocktail bar with comfy sofas and armchairs, featuring French doors that can be opened out onto a private courtyard during summer months.
The menu kicks off in true style with charred squid, garlic, parsley and pepperoncino or tarragon gnocchi, rabbit ragu and pancetta, which can also be served as a main course. Follow on with sea bream, wild fennel, green olives and potato or meat fans might choose the lamb rump, agrodolce lentils and Romano peppers. Desserts stay close to home with vanilla panna cotta and poached plum or rum and raisin semifreddo.
There's an interesting selection of Italian wine carefully sourced from small independent vintners alongside well known producers, as well as craft beers, seasonal cocktails and freshly made juices.
