Review on The White Spoon
Tucked away on Well Walk with views of the historic St Mary's Church and churchyard in the spa town of Cheltenham, The White Spoon was launched in September 2015. It's the first solo venture from chef Chris White and his partner Purdey Spooner, who chose the name of the restaurant from their last names. The venue has undergone a smart refurbishment, both inside and out, and now reflects a simply decorated but elegant dining room with cosy amber lighting and bare wood tables from reclaimed timber.
Chris has climbed the culinary ladder at some acclaimed kitchens during his career including Lainston House Hotel, the Pheasant Inn at Bassenthwaite Lake, but most notably Heston Blumenthal's Fat Duck and Hinds Head in Bray. Ingredients are sourced with care and everything on the seasonal menu is produced in-house using modern techniques. Kick off with rabbit and bacon terrine, rabbit liver mousse and roasted applies or from the sea there's hay smoked mackerel, fennel, horseradish and watercress. Main courses usher in Cornish lemon sole fillets, capers, pickled dulse, shrimps, garlic crumb and anchovy emulsion or meat fans will enjoy the blackened sirloin of beef, potato terrine, pan roasted carrot, Chanterelle mushroom and onion flavours. Desserts look to hazelnut praline soufflé paired with crème fraiche ice cream or there's dark chocolate and Cointreau sponge, white chocolate, honeycomb and burnt orange sorbet.
The well chosen global wine list hits the target, service is friendly, the atmosphere is relaxed ensuring that The White Spoon is a welcome addition to the Cheltenham dining scene.
