Review on The Honest Miller
Nestling in an area of outstanding natural beauty south of the North Downs in the picturesque village of Brook, The Honest Miller occupies a detached building circa 1609. Located just a couple of miles from Ashford and 15 miles from Canterbury, Brook's only pub is a popular haunt for both locals from the surrounding villages, as well as walkers and cyclists. It has recently been taken over by husband and wife team Lisa and Gareth Cox, who learned his trade with the likes of Gordon Ramsey and Richard Phillips.
Gareth makes the most of the abundance of local produce on his doorstep and has put his own stamp on a tempting mix of new, innovative dishes and updated classics, with everything including bread and ice cream made-in-house. The menu kicks off in true style with Forge Farm duck and cranberry Scotch egg with Cumberland sauce or Rye Bay mussels cooked in a smoked bacon, shallot and cider sauce, served with garlic bread. When it comes to main courses there's much to enjoy with Old Dairy braised ox cheeks, parsnip potato puree, baby parsnips, carrots and ale gravy or pan roasted Diver plaice, sorrel crushed new potatoes, French beans and brown shrimp butter sauce. Desserts are equally inviting ideas with a warm white chocolate and ale cake, Old Dairy ice cream and almond brittle or spiced poached pear, warm hazelnut flapjack and pear sorbet.
To complement the food, The Honest Miller has an ever changing wine list to suit all tastes and budgets, together with a great selection of Kentish cask ales. The cosy interior welcomes guests with a roaring log fire in winter, while in warm weather you can enjoy the al fresco pleasures of their lovely pub garden.
