Review on The Ninth
In the heart of Fitzrovia, the Ninth is a thoroughbred addition to Charlotte Street, located a short walk from Tottenham Court Road and Goodge Street tube. It's the first solo venture from Jun Tanaka, former Executive Chef of the Pearl Restaurant in Holborn, where his culinary expertise was awarded with three prestigious AA Rosettes. Set over two floors with a small covered terrace for al fresco dining, the venue is the ninth restaurant Jan has worked in, hence the name.
The restaurant's interior has been created by Dale Atkinson of Rosendale Design, with exposed brick walls and a ground floor oak-topped bar lined with plush terracotta leather bar stools, reserved for walk-ins. Vintage copper kitchenware and antique mirrors lead diners to the sultry lit upstairs dining room, with hand-painted textured walls featuring iron wine racks and blown glass pendant lighting dangling from the ceiling.
Jun proposes a regularly changing seasonal menu with French Mediterranean style dishes designed for sharing. Typical offerings on the carte include delicious snacks called Barbadians, a Monacan speciality of lightly fried Swiss chard, pine nuts and feta-filled ravioli. Elsewhere there's cured pork belly, pecorino and mustard leaf or pickled mussels, chorizo and smoked paprika from the raw and cured section. Larger dishes showcase whole roast quail, smoked bacon, foie gras, lardo and grapes or fish fans might opt for the spiced cod, mouclade of mussels and roast cauliflower. To finish there's chocolate moelleux, yoghurt ice cream and poached pear or pain perdu, honeycomb and vanilla ice cream.
The wine list consists of about 25 red and 25 white wines together with a small selection of rosé and dessert wines, with plenty of options available for the glass and carafe. The restaurant was the proud recipient of a Michelin star in the 2017 edition of the Guide.
