Review on Rojano's in the Square
Just steps from the harbour in the heart of the popular Cornish fishing village of Padstow, Rojano's in the Square is Michelin-starred Paul Ainsworth's second restaurant, a casual Italian eatery. It has been a restaurant since 1962 and came under the ownership of Paul and his business partner Derek Mapp in May 2010, opening in its current guise in March 2011, after undergoing a complete transformation. Laid out on two levels with an illuminated staircase to the upstairs Grazing Bar with an open glass fronted balustrade, the main dining room on the ground floor is a modern venue with walls adorned with an eclectic range of Italian inspired pictures. There's also an outside covered courtyard, popular in summer months, but during winter there's patio heaters to keep you warm.
Paul Dodd has appointed Jack Clements to lead the kitchen and he showcases rustic affordable Italian dishes using authentic Italian produce, as well as trusted Cornish suppliers. The restaurant is also open from 10am serving coffee, Cornish tea and cakes.
Expect the likes of Cornish 'Mackerel on toast' pickled, then blowtorched mackerel fillet, with spring onions, pickled red onion, chilli, tomatoes, coriander, basil and lemon zest with chargrilled sourdough or tomato, basil pesto and parmesan dough balls, amazing tomato and garlic butter, basil pesto and Parmesan. Main courses pick up on the theme with linguini pasta with tiger prawns and Loch Duart Salmon seared tiger prawns and salmon, garlic, chilli and lemon with toasted pine nuts, cherry tomatoes, rocket and olive oil, or calzone beef ragu, spicy sausage, mascarpone, roquito peppers, red onion, buffalo mozzarella and cherry tomatoes. There's also a good selection of pizzas with their signature thin crust made with soughdough. Indulgent desserts close the show in the shape of a chocolate brownie, coconut ice cream, salted caramel ice cream and chocolate mousse, finished off with popping candy and rice crisp-crunch.
The wine list has been carefully sourced from Italy with options available by the glass, and there's also classic cocktails and Italian beers.
