Review on Opso
Just a few steps from the Hellenic Centre and Paddington Street Gardens, Opso occupies a corner site on Paddington Street and Nottingham Place in the heart of Marylebone. Taking its name from the ancient Greek word for delicacy the restaurant is set out over two floors.
Designed by K Studio with an industrial vibe, the ground floor features a bar and a large central marble-topped communal table, with a few smaller tables around the edges. A dark blue steel frame with oak shelves filled with terracotta serving dishes and planters runs the length of the restaurant. There's oak panelling and ceramic tiled murals by artist Joanna Burtenshaw and hand laid mosaic flooring, while the downstairs dining room seats 30, with two cosy private dining booths seating 8. There are also tables outside for al fresco dining when the sun shines.
The menu is designed for sharing and has been overseen by Georgianna Hiliadaki and Nikos Roussos, founders of the two-Michelin starred restaurant Funky Gourmet in Athens. Showcasing modern Greek tapas with ingredients carefully sourced, many of which are supplied directly from Greece. Typical offerings on the carte include thinly sliced smoked and cured Greek ox-tongue on avocado cream; slow cooked pork belly, tomatoes, red onion and tzatziki sauce in a pita bread and grilled fresh salmon fillet with tomato jam and aioli mayo in a squid ink bun. To close the show with something sweet there's Greek puffed 'donuts', honey, walnuts and kaimaki ice cream or molasses and chocolate soft cookie with walnuts and butterscotch sauce and salted caramel ice cream.
To accompany the food there's Greek, European and New World wines and a bespoke cocktail menu.
