Review on St Bart's Brewery
St Bart's Brewery is a welcome addition to the Smithfield dining scene located just a short walk from both the Barbican and Farringdon tube stations. An historic pub, bar and restaurant cleverly designed for a variety of private events, it is owned by the 400 acre Hush Heath Estate and Winery in Staplehurst, Kent.
The interiors have been created by Katrine Bradley, the former design director of Malmaison and Hotel du Vin, a light and airy space with double height ceilings and sparkling chandeliers. The panelled wood topped bar is on the ground floor featuring an antique mirror and stainless steel tanks containing Meantime's London Fresh lager. An open staircase leads to the mezzanine dining level with plus grey velvet banquette seating and walls lights made from vintage barometers. Also upstairs is the The Balfour Bar with an acid treated copper-topped bar and industrial lighting.
Executive chef is Kalifa Diakhaby, a former head chef at Bistro du Vin as well as working at acclaimed restaurants such as L'Oranger with Jason Atherton and Stephen Terry at Cecconi's. Ingredients are carefully sourced from local farms and producers and meat is supplied from the nearby Smithfield Market. Fish fans might opt for spicy king prawn skewers served whole with garlic and harissa marinade and coriander, followed by a main course of seared tune fillet with sesame seed crust and soy reduction. Elsewhere there's the Smithfield burger, sweet cured bacon, Montgomery cheddar, baby gem, tomato and fries, finishing with a mini dessert of sticky toffee pudding paired with butterscotch sauce.
There is an ever evolving wine list from around the globe, as well as their own award winning English Sparkling wine, Balfour Brut Rosé and an impressive selection of craft beers.
