Review on The Shed
The Shed is a thoroughbred addition to Notting Hill located in the former premises of The Ark, just off the Bayswater Road. It is the enterprise of the Gladwin brothers, who grew up together on their farm in Nutbourne, Sussex. It all fits together rather well, Oliver is the chef having previously worked at the Oxo Tower, Launceston Place, Just St James and River Cottage, Richard whose experience includes Brawn and Bunga Bunga manages front of house, while Gregory runs the farm that supplies their hand-reared meat.
Inside the country theme continues with a rustic, vibrant and fun décor, the bar is clad with corrugated iron and an eight-foot tractor bonnet hangs from the ceiling. Reclaimed wood serves as benches with colourful barrels forming the base, while walls feature a Coleman's mustard sign and farm yard pictures. At the back of the Shed is a Butcher's Table where private dinners for up to 14 can be held, as well as butchery and cooking demonstrations. When the weather is fine, there's a front terrace where tables are at a premium.
Oliver makes the most of the farm to table cuisine with a daily changing menu with a focus on sharing plates listed as Mouthfuls, Slow Cooking and Fast Cooking. Among the delights on offer are cider soused herring, grilled baby gem, radish and nasturtium or maybe vineyard rabbit terrine, pickled carrots and mushroom ketchup. Follow on with cider braised pork belly, shallot, bacon jam and reindeer moss or Pollock, mussels, cauliflower, curry and sea purslane. Desserts are a fitting conclusion with The Shed magnum viennetta parfait or honeycomb crunchie, mascarpone and tarragon sugar.
Wine is supplied from their own boutique vineyard which has produced a range of award winning wines, beer comes from Sussex-based Hepworth Breweries & Co and there's tasty cocktails as well. The waiting staff decked out in checked shirts and waistcoats are engaging, injecting warmth into the experience.
