It might be a little off the beaten track, but The Hare Inn Restaurant is certainly worth seeking out, set in the picturesque countryside village of Scawton near Sutton Bank, on the edge of the North York Moors. It is run by husband and wife team, Liz and Paul Jackson, he mans the stoves while she adeptly runs front of house. Since taken over the pub it has been the recipient of numerous awards including "Restaurant of the Year 2015" by The Flavours of Herriot Country Awards, Yorkshire's "Restaurant of the Year 2015", an entry in the Michelin Restaurant Guide and has been awarded three prestigious Rosettes by the AA Restaurant Guide.

Housed in a 13th century building it has a welcoming ambience with cosy log burning stoves, beams a plenty and exposed brick walls. A traditional but chic décor with original features, the low ceiling dining room has flagstone flooring and wooden candlelit tables and comfy chesterfield sofas in the lounge area.

Paul Jackson is a self-taught chef, who is certainly hitting the high notes with his flavoursome and inventive cuisine. Lunchtimes are a casual affair with the kitchen showing its serious intention in the evening, when it steps up a gear for a choice of regularly changing tasting menus to reflect the very best of seasonal produce, with the options of wine pairings. Some of the dishes that appear could be beam with sea vegetables, mussel and cockle as well as deer, cauliflower, truffle, and hen of the woods. When it comes to choosing a desserts there's Black Forest, chocolate and cherry kirsch or you could opt for the cheese board served with biscuits and chutney.
