Review on Estiatorio Milos
Acclaimed chef and restaurateur Costas Spiliadis has set up shop in London's Regent street, having already established critically acclaimed restaurants in Montreal, New York, Athens, Las Vegas and Miami. His first restaurant originated in 1979 in Montreal and for his 2015 UK outpost he has chosen an imposing Grade II listed building, originally British Columbia House it has benefited from a multi-million pound Crown Estate makeover. The interiors have been transformed by Montreal-based architect Alain Carle, creating a swanky white marbled space with large windows swathed in white voile curtains and retro spotlights illuminating the ground floor and mezzanine above. Decked out in a neutral palette, tables are laid with pristine white linen.
Taking centre stage is a massive iced fish counter with a separate tank for lobster. Seafood is flown in daily mainly from Greece and the Mediterranean, but some is sourced more locally. You have the option of choosing your own fish and deciding how you would like it cooked for example, grilled, fried, sashimi or tartare. If meat is your preference, the kitchen can oblige with the likes of fresh grilled lamb chops or maybe filet mignon served with Greek fried potatoes. Greek desserts close the show in shape of baklava, layered filo with almonds, pistachios and walnuts, honey and cinnamon or galaktoboureko, custard with layered filo crust.
There's a well considered wine list to complement the dishes, showcasing a good selection of lesser known imported Greek wines, but prices are at the top end of the spectrum.
