Review on Morito Hackney
The husband and wife team Samantha and Sam Clark behind the successful Moro restaurant and Morito on Exmouth Market, have opened a third Spanish tapas venture in May 2016 in East London, at the top end of Hackney Road. Designed by artist Dillwyn Smith, with contributions from Hackney-based designer Sam Newton, it features industrial elements dominated by a lovely horseshoe blue flecked marble topped bar, as well as a polished concrete floor and ceiling. Flooded with natural light from the large windows, there's reclaimed metal seating and an open kitchen where diners can watch all the action of the chefs at work.
The menu designed for sharing will focus on dishes from Southern Spain, North Africa and the Eastern Mediterranean, as well as the Greek island of Crete where Head Chef Marianna Leivaditaki worked in her family's fish restaurant. Look for cheese fritters and Cretan thyme honey or from the sea, charcoal grilled whole mackerel, tomato salad and harissa. Meat lovers might opt for the charcoal grilled lamb chops, paprika and anchovy butter or fried rabbit, rosemary and moscatel vinegar. Desserts are in keeping - witness filo, gum mastic labneh, fig and peach salad or maybe zamorano and fuente los angeles cheese, membrillo and picos.
The food is supported by a Spanish wine list with options available by the bottle, carafe and glass.
