Review on Refectory Kitchen and Terrace
The Refectory Kitchen and Terrace in York is a recent addition to respected restaurateur Des McDonald's stable of restaurants. It's the signature restaurant set within the iconic Royal York Hotel, a Grade II listed building which has undergone a multi-million pound facelift and sits directly opposite York railway station. The light and airy room has been designed by award-winning architects Michaelis Boyd, whose previous work included London's Groucho Club and the Soho House Group. Featuring exposed brick walls and low hanging filament lighting, there's a mix of smart brown leather chairs and banquette seating set against dressed down tables, with pots of fragrant herbs lining the window shelves.
The kitchen emphasises field to fork by employing high-quality ingredients from the spoils of the Yorkshire larder. Offering guests an informal and casual experience by day, things move up a gear in the evening, when the menu takes on board dishes like hand-picked Whitby crab, mayonnaise and sieved egg or pressed hock, pickled quail eggs and toasted mustard monkey, Main courses deliver Anglesey sea bass, brown shrimps and sea vegetables or Yorkshire pork cutlet, chorizo braised beans and Doreen's black pudding. Round things off with stem ginger Parkin served with vanilla custard or a dark chocolate and salted caramel pot and hazelnut biscuit.
Adjacent to the restaurant is the Chapter House bar serving an extensive wine list, sprits, craft ales and cocktails such as the Yorkshire Twister, rum, maraschino, grapefruit and ginger.
