Review on Lussmanns
The country of Hertfordshire is home to Lussmanns, a small independent brasserie group with four restaurants situated in the towns of St Albans, Hertford, Harpenden and Hitchin. Harpenden was the third branch they opened in September 2013, situated on the former site of The Bean Tree French restaurant. Set in an 18th century former coach house overlooking Leyton Green, it has been sympathetically converted and offers guests a charming rural ambience, with a delightful walled garden for al fresco dining during summer months.
Lussmanns places great emphasis on sustainability when sourcing supplies for their menu, and in 2014 and 2015 received the Sustainable Small Restaurant Group of the Year at the SRA Awards. Kick off with pan-fried cod cheeks garlic, chilli, scallion and lime or Sussex free-range pork rillette cornichon and toast. Main courses provide ample choice from wild South Coast sea bream Chichester clams, garlic, thyme, anchovy and cherry tomatoes, to North African spiced organic lamb Heritage Greek salad from the grill. To conclude there are comforting desserts such as honey and thyme pudding caramel sauce and clotted cream ice cream or Grand Marnier crème brûlée.
There's a carefully compiled wine list, British craft beers, English organic juices and Cornish tea to complement the dishes.
