Review on Casita Andina

Casita Andina is the latest offspring from Martin Morales set on Great Windmill Street in the heart of Soho, just minutes from Piccadilly Circus station. It joins a small stable of Peruvian restaurants that Morales has successfully established with Ceviche in Old Street and Soho, as well as Andina in Shoreditch. Billed as London's first picanteria which are cosy family run restaurants in Andinas that serve traditional Andean dishes and snacks.

Laid out over two floors, the ground floor has a ceviche counter with a takeaway area, a pisco bar and further seating towards the rear of the room. Upstairs is the main dining room which leads out onto a small turquoise open air terrace. The restaurant pays homage to Peru with specially commissioned Peruvian art and textiles displayed throughout the restaurant. Andean weaving and embroidery decorates the seating and carved cedar wood patterns feature on the doors, with walls displaying hand-crafted Peruvian tin mirrors and artworks.

The vibrant menu of Peruvian dishes are gluten free, ingredients are sourced with care and more than 90% comes from sustainable local produce, with less than 10% from organic fair trade produce from Peru, and meat is supplied from high welfare and Red Tractor affiliated farms.

Among the delights on offer there's British farmed trout, trout caviar, amarillo chilli tigers milk, violet potatoes and amaranth or maybe lamb sweetbreads, coriander and dark beer sauce, carapulcra potatoes and peanuts. Other options worth considering are skate wing, rocoto lasagna and fresco cheese or Annatto-marinated lamb sirloin, Andean uchucuta herbs, olluco Andean potato, and spicy cancha powder. To close the show the Peruvian Alto El Sol chocolate ball, elderberry gel and chocolate crumble is highly recommended.

The food is matched by a thoughtfully chosen wine list as well as Peruvian inspired cocktails, and their own exclusive beer created in collaboration with Islington-based Hammerton Brewery.
