Review on Talli Joe
Talli Joe is a buzzy all day restaurant serving contemporary Indian half plates and cocktails, handily placed for theatre-goers on Shaftesbury Avenue. Chef patron is Sameer Taneja, who formerly worked at the critically acclaimed Benares restaurant in Mayfair. It's a colourful open plan space that includes bar seats, benches, cosy corners with banquettes and giant bulb fittings and track spotlights illuminating the room. Bright wall-hangings come from India and there's a large pink sign saying, 'Too fly to drunk roared the lion'. The name of the restaurant is inspired by the 'dive bars' of Indian and 'Joe' is a mythical traveller exploring the many regions of India and all that it has to offer, while talli means tipsy in Hindu.
Vibrant small plates and cocktails get equal billing on the menu which showcases lesser known regional dishes and an Indian inspired cocktail list. There's much to enjoy such as Rasam shrimp shot, shrimp poached in south Indian tomato broth or Dhokla salad, steamed gram flour cakes, kohlrabi and nuts. If meat is your preference there's Kolhapuri chaap, tandoori lamb chop with potato salad and mustard dressing or stir-fried chicken tossed with south Indian spices and curry leaves.
