Review on Six Portland Road
Six Portland Road is a gem of a neighbourhood restaurant, named after its address in the affluent and fashionable area of Holland Park in West London, it's the brainchild of Oli Barker who formerly headed up the critically acclaimed Terroirs with Ed Wilson. Overlooked by an open kitchen, the narrow long room has an unassuming décor in pale colours. Tables are laid with white paper cloths set against wooden chairs, and there's amusing artwork on the walls. When the weather is warm the doors at the front of the restaurant open out onto the bustling street.
The kitchen makes admirable use of impeccable seasonal produce for a carefully crafted concise menu, allowing the quality of the natural ingredients to shine through. Kick off with mackerel, beetroot, crème fraiche and horseradish or rabbit and pork terrine. Main courses pick up on skate, rouille, fried Cornish new potatoes and watercress or there's pork chop, bobby beans, anchovy and rosemary dressing. Desserts conjure up a sinful chocolate mousse, griottines, crème fraîche and almonds or for something more refreshing there's lemon posset, blackcurrants and shortbread.
To accompany the food, there's a carefully chosen innovative wine list of some 80 references, with some lovely options by the glass.
