Review on Elystan Street

Phil Howard certainly doesn't let the grass grow under his feet, having sold his two Michelin-starred restaurant The Square in February, he has opened a new venture in partnership with Rebecca Mascarenhas in September 2016, called Elystan Street. Taking its name from the street it's located on in Chelsea, this is the third London restaurant they have collaborated on and joins the acclaimed Michelin-starred Kitchen W8 in Kensington and Sonny's Kitchen in Barnes.

Set on a prime corner spot, it occupies the building that once housed Tom Aikens restaurant, but has now been given a fresh new look both inside and out by Clare Nelson Design, who created the décor for The Ledbury and Chez Bruce. Decked out in neutral colours, it's a light and airy room with tables set on oak wood flooring, with splashes of colour provided by the blue and pink chairs and blue curved banquette seating.

The kitchen offers different lunch and dinner menus delivering ingredient-led dishes bursting with natural flavour. To start the ball rolling there's smoked mackerel velouté with Porthilly oysters, leek hearts and smoked eel toasts or roast calf’s sweetbread with truffled autumn slaw, seeded nut butter and Mimolette. To follow fish fans might opt for the fillet of cod with lightly curried cauliflower puree, golden raisins, coriander and lime or from the land there's loin of lamb with pesto roasted aubergine, garlic purée, green olives and balsamic vinegar. The choice of desserts could run to roasted figs with goat’s milk ice cream, lemon and thyme fritters and olive oil or smashed brownie with chocolate foam, hazelnut ice cream and vanilla Chantilly.

The wine list offers ample choice across the range from all the major wine growing regions, together with London beers and tasty house cocktails. The restaurant was awarded a Michelin star in the 2018 edition of the Guide.
