Review on The Oxford Blue
Housed within two former 19th-century gamekeeper's cottages and an old pub, Oxford Blue launched in December 2016, set in Old Windsor a short drive from the major tourist attractions of Legoland and the royal residence of Windsor Castle. It is the brainchild of Steven Ellis, the former chef of three-Michelin starred Restaurant Gordon Ramsey, as well as Andrew Pern's Star Inn located in Harome, North Yorkshire. The building has undergone a magnificent refurbishment using natural elements and modern furnishings, guests are welcomed by a central cosy log fire in winter and a wonderful terrace in summer to take in the views.
Ingredients have been carefully sourced from impeccable UK suppliers showcasing the finest seasonal produce for its up-to-the minute menu. The Oxford Blue also benefits from their own herb garden where they grow an array of different herbs and edible flowers to add to their dishes. Jerusalem artichoke soup is served with homemade bread or meat lovers are in for a treat with braised suckling pig's trotter with black pudding, apple and sauce gribiche. Main courses embrace fisherman's stew with cod, mussels and squid or from the land dodine of pigeon with braised lentils, foie gras, walnuts and smoked bacon. Deserts are pretty showy offerings in the shape of soufflé Tregothnan Earl Grey paired with biscuit ice cream or clementine parfait, confit orange, ginger, mulled wine and marigold leaf.
