Review on The Real Greek
The tenth branch of this popular chain of restaurants The Real Greek opened in October 2016, located in a former convenience store on bustling Muswell Hill Broadway. There's a cosy neighbourhood vibe about this likeable eatery with vibrant red banquette seating running along one side of the restaurant and a small window through to the kitchen. Walls are decorated with lovely tiling on one side, while the other features pretty ceramic plates. Like its siblings, this branch of the Real Greek mini-chain deals in genuine family-friendly food, skewered souvlaki wrapped in sheaths of warm grilled bread are one of the main attractions, and the choice varies seasonally (pork from November to May, lamb, chicken and vegetables at other times of the year).
Mezedes are also perennial favourites, especially at lunchtime: look for little dolmades, salt cod fritters, Feta 'from the barrel' and gigandes plaki (oven-baked Kastorian giant beans in tomato and herb sauce). Desserts are equally inviting with a traditional homemade Greek Baklava, crisp filo pastry with walnut and honey or a Greek sundae, luxury vanilla and pistachio ice cream served with nuts and seeds, finished with a creamy caramel sauce and whipped cream. Drink Greek beer, an ouzo-spiked cocktail or one of the down-home native wines.
