Review on The Real Greek
The Real Greek on St. Martin’s Lane is located just two minutes walk from Leicester Square tube station, part of an ever expanding group of restaurants that were founded in 1999. Inside the intimate restaurant has simply laid polished wood tables and a rustic décor with exposed brick walls. Like its siblings, this branch of the Real Greek chain deals in genuine family-friendly food, skewered souvlaki wrapped in sheaths of warm grilled bread are one of the main attractions, and the choice varies seasonally (pork from November to May, lamb, chicken and vegetables at other times of the year).
Mezedes are also perennial favourites, especially at lunchtime: look for little dolmades, salt cod fritters, Feta 'from the barrel' and gigandes plaki (oven-baked Kastorian giant beans in tomato and herb sauce). Desserts are equally inviting with a traditional homemade Greek Baklava, crisp filo pastry with walnut and honey or a Greek sundae, luxury vanilla and pistachio ice cream served with nuts and seeds, finished with a creamy caramel sauce and whipped cream. Drink Greek beer, an ouzo-spiked cocktail or one of the down-home native wines.
