Review on The Real Greek
The Real Greek chain opened their second restaurant outside London in the exciting £85m WestQuay Watermark development in Southampton. A casual and relaxed eatery offering a welcome respite from the shopping centre with its vibrant décor. Red banquette seating is scattered with colourful cushions, and the iconic picture of Santorini's blue domed church dominates the back wall. A bar set with stools sits one side of the room, while the other side features an open kitchen where you can watch the chefs at work. Like its siblings, this branch of the Real Greek deals in genuine family-friendly food, skewered souvlaki wrapped in sheaths of warm grilled bread are one of the main attractions, and the choice varies seasonally (pork from November to May, lamb, chicken and vegetables at other times of the year).
Mezedes are also perennial favourites, especially at lunchtime: look for little dolmades, salt cod fritters, Feta 'from the barrel' and gigandes plaki (oven-baked Kastorian giant beans in tomato and herb sauce). Desserts are equally inviting with a traditional homemade Greek Baklava, crisp filo pastry with walnut and honey or a Greek sundae, luxury vanilla and pistachio ice cream served with nuts and seeds, finished with a creamy caramel sauce and whipped cream. Drink Greek beer, an ouzo-spiked cocktail or one of the down-home native wines.
