Review on Hai Cenato
Hai Cenato meaning 'Have you had dinner?' is the ninth restaurant in six years to join Michelin-starred chef and restaurateur, Jason Atherton's stable of restaurants. A New-York style Italian restaurant, it's the second collaboration between Jason and his wife Irha together with chef-patron Paul Hood, who is also the Executive chef of the Michelin-starred Social Eating House.
Located within the new £250m Victoria's NOVA restaurant, leisure and residential Land Securities development, the venue has been created by the acclaimed Russell Sage Studio. A smartly designed space with floor-to-ceiling glass windows, distressed wallpaper and dark red banquette seating, tall bar chairs overlook the open kitchen with its large pizza ovens. Illuminated by vintage lights, the back wall of the restaurant is decorated with hand-drawn caricatures of Atherton's favourite chefs, who will each showcase their own special pizza each month.
Paul Hood has appointed Frankie Van Loo, the former Head Chef of Social Wine & Tapas to lead the kitchen. The menu covers a lot of ground from pizzas, pasta and risotto to grilled meats and fish, as well as homemade gelato. To start the ball rolling there's grilled octopus and Cornish squid, braised lentils, cured bacon and green chilli salsa verde or Cobble Lane cured salamis and meats served with breads and Nocellara olives. Follow on with Corzetti, aged beef bolognese, tomato, sage burnt butter and Berkswell or from the grill a whole boneless gilthead bream, confit potato, saffron, lemon and fennel. Desserts maintain the Italian momentum with the likes of mascarpone, espresso and chocolate semifreddo or warm brioche, salted caramel gelato sandwich.
Above the restaurant is the cocktail bar the Drunken Oyster designed to resemble a railway carriage, where group bar executive Jamie Jones serves signature Italian cocktails such as White Diamond, white truffle, Disaronno amaretto, lemon, thyme and egg white.
