Review on Arrels by Marga Coll
Arrels by Marga Coll is the showpiece restaurant in the 5-star adults-only Gran Meliá del Mar, situated in the exclusive resort of Illetas on the south west coast of Mallorca, just five minutes from Puerto Portals and a fifteen minutes drive to Palma. Arrels is the local word for 'roots' and the cuisine by talented chef Margo Coll is based on traditional Mallorcan dishes with a modern twist. The restaurant was launched in mid-2016 and follows the success of her hugely popular restaurant Micel, located in the picturesque village of Selva which she opened in 2012.
Featuring an elegant and contemporary décor, the restaurant is located one level below the reception and entrance of the hotel. Live music playing in the background adds to the relaxed ambience, and it has the added bonus of a lovely terrace with beautiful views across the Bay of Palma for alfresco diners.
For dinner the kitchen offers guests a choice of a five or seven course tasting menu with a focus on locally sourced ingredients. To start you might be offered goats cheese and strawberry salad, followed by sea bream with potatoes and seasonal vegetables. Next you could enjoy succulent roast shoulder of lamb with spinach and Porreres apricots with thyme flavoured red potato purée. For a sweet-toothed finale there's chocolate filled bunuelos.
The restaurant has its own wine cellar offering an extensive selection of Spanish and locally produced Mallorcan wines.
