Review on 108 Garage
The 108 Garage restaurant just off Portobello Road in Notting Hill is a lively new arrival, whose inventive cuisine is hitting the headlines. Located as the name suggests in a former garage, it's the invention of a former financier, Luca Longobardi aka "The Mafia's Banker", who spent 30 days in a maximum security prison in Brazil before being exonerated, and talented chef Chris Denney, whose CV includes highly regarded kitchens such as Hambleton Hall and The Square.
The dining room is surprisingly cosy given its brick walls, concrete flooring and exposed painted girders, illuminated by bare filament bulbs. There's counter dining at the copper metal bar top with a view to the kitchen, while elsewhere there's a mish-mash of furniture sourced from the local market and bric-a-brac shops.
Denney's food is influenced by his travels around the globe with carefully sourced seasonal ingredients meticulously selected to enhance the taste, textures and aesthetic of each dish. Enjoy warm sourdough and pots of chicken liver parfait while perusing the menu, before choosing lamb heart agnolotti, swede dashi and mustard oil or from the sea roast octopus with golden turnip and tahini. When it comes to main courses there's Jacob's ladder, black garlic, roast baby cucumber and dill pickle tartare or Turbot with roe mayo, monks beard and potato salt. Round things off with chocolate crémeux served with Jerusalem artichoke ice cream on toasted puffed wild rice.
