Review on Galley
The new kid on the block on lively Upper Street in Islington is the Galley Restaurant, just a short walk from Angel underground. Owned by Polish brother and sister Oriona Robb and Marcel Grzyb, who made his name at Soho's Randall and Aubin where he was Head Chef for ten years.
Oriona together with designer Mika Burdett have created a stylish venue with a vintage vibe featuring green velvet banquettes, a black and white geometric ceiling, Moroccan tiles, antique mirrors and art deco lamps. There's also counter seating at the bar where you can watch all the action in the open kitchen. At the front of the restaurant there's a small bar with French windows, opening out onto the street during summer months for al fresco dining.
Marcel's global menu follows the seasons with produce sourced from artisan suppliers along the lines of small and large plates, with fish showing up strongly. Typical dishes that appear could be octopus and chorizo a la plancha caramelised onion purée and smoked garlic or roasted Cornish Hake pancetta crumb, potato and leek terrine. Offerings from the land include chicken liver and pistachio pâté paired with cranberry jelly, lard croutons and pickled onion. After that try something sweet like dark chocolate and amaretto fondant, clotted cream ice cream and mulled wine infused berries or salted caramel cheesecake, pecan praline and toffee sauce.
The wine list has options available by the glass, and there's also craft beers, tasty cocktails and a gin and tonic menu.
