Review on Mere
The hotly anticipated restaurant Mere opened its doors in March 2017, located in the heart of Fitzrovia on Charlotte Street, named after Queen Charlotte who married King George III in 1761. The duo behind the venture have A list credentials in the culinary world, with Monica Galetti, former senior sous chef for 16 years at Le Gavroche and 'MasterChef: The Professionals' judge, and her husband David who also held the position of Head Sommelier at the Michelin starred restaurant.
Laid out over two floors, the restaurant Mere, pronounced Mary is both the French word for mother and is also Monica's own mother's name. The ground floor bar is an elegantly appointed area with luxuriously upholstered blue velvet seating, and a striking signature installation by English artist Warren Kerley, featuring hundreds of metal cork tops from Champagne bottles collected by David in France. The light-filled basement dining room looks eminently chic with well-spaced tables on dark oak flooring, mirrored glass wall panelling and a feature traditional Samoan siapo cloth and other island artworks displayed on the walls by Soloman Daniel, Monica's cousin.
Monica emphasises the finest seasonal produce melding classical and contemporary techniques to produce stylishly presented French dishes with South Pacific influences. You might begin with ox tongue, brined cabbage, pickled celeriac, kohlrabi and gribiche dressing or octopus 'a la plancha', fennel, 'nduja, caper and raisin condiment. When it comes to main courses, there's poached lobster and kataifi claw, potato puree, sweetheart cabbage and bisque sauce or from the land enjoy 30 day aged sirloin, glazed cheek, sweet onion beignet and tarragon creme fraiche. Desserts also show plenty of creative energy, witness banana and coconut cream pie, roasted banana and rum caramel or poached pear, pecan crumble, brown butter paired with spiced pear ice cream.
Given David's expertise, guests can look forward to an impressive wine list with special selections from both the Old and New World.
