Review on Moor Hall Restaurant

The showpiece restaurant of Moor Hall is set in a stunning Grade II listed building that can trace its history back to the thirteenth century. Just 25 minutes drive from Liverpool in the Lancashire village of Aughton, it's surrounded by five acres of stunning gardens with views to the south over a beautiful lake, said to be the remains of a medieval moat. The current owners Andy and Tracey Bell acquired the property in 2015, and it has since undergone a major renovation and refurbishment with designer Martin Nealon introducing contemporary features.

Chef/patron of the restaurant is the highly regarded Mark Birchall, who was previously the Executive Chef of the two-starred Michelin restaurant L'Enclume in Cumbria, and has also sharpened his knives in El Celler de Can Roca in Girona, twice voted the world's best restaurant. The restaurant has a modern, chic setting for Mark's exquisite dishes, surrounded by glass walls with commanding views of the property. Adjacent to the restaurant there's a wine cellar housing an extensive selection of wines that roam the globe, and a cheese room for storing the very best of British and Irish Farmhouse cheeses. Private dining for up to 14 guests is available in The Argonne Room, an oak panelled room with a large fireplace.

Open for lunch and dinner from Wednesday to Sunday, guests have a choice of menus including a five and eight course tasting menu for dinner and lunch, where there is also a three course option. Typical dishes that appear include crab and turnip broth, anise hyssop and sunflower seeds, aged beef in charcoal, barbecued celeriac, mustard and shallot, as well as monkfish roasted on the bone, garlic and mussel cream, salsify and sea vegetables. Finely executed desserts close the show in the shape of rhubarb, milk and fennel, honey beer, Bramley apple, aged caramel and marigold.

The restaurant is already picking up awards having been voted the top restaurant in Lancashire by the Restaurant Magazine and receiving two Michelin stars in the 2019 edition of the Guide, as well as achieving a four Rosette ranking.
