Review on Red Rooster
Talented chef Marcus Samuelsson landed in London with his Red Rooster restaurant in May 2017, after opening his original restaurant in Harlem in 2011. Named in honour of the legendary Harlem speakeasy in the heart of Manhattan, the UK sibling can be found in the basement of the trendy Curtain Hotel in Shoreditch. Marcus has also opened the Tienda Roosteria, an all-day bar on the ground floor of the hotel, serving coffee and Mexican-style breakfast from 7am - 11am, followed by tacos and tequila until 2am.
The US neighbourhood restaurant is no stranger to celebrities and Marcus has even had the privilege of cooking for President Obama, and his famous 'Obama' short ribs braised with spring onions and honey glazed Jerusalem artichokes, will also appear on the London menu. Showcasing his trademark American modern soul food, the eclectic menu will focus on carefully sourced British ingredients. Amongst the small plates diners can expect Uncle T's gravlax, corn bread, avocado, courgette and soft egg or we see him go back to his roots with Helga's Swedish-style meatballs, gnocchi, pickled gravy and lingonberries. Moving on fish gets a good airing in a signature dish of whole roasted fish al pastor, mojo de ajo, potato and coriander or among the carnivorous options there's Aunt Maybel's paccheri, lamb, green olives, tomato and favas.
Desserts are worth saving room for witness the drunken doughnut, lemon curd, bourbon salt caramel ice cream, almond paste and dark rum or the rooster princess cake, vanilla mousse, marzipan and raspberry sorbet. Live music features five times a week and on Sundays, brunch is accompanied by the House Gospel Choir.
The food is matched by a carefully compiled wine list, beer and zingy cocktails such as Madam Baker, Grey Goose Limon, Suze, St.Germain, chablis, burlesque bitters and soda.
