Review on Issho
Four years after the success of Angelica and Crafthouse in Leeds, the critically acclaimed D & D group opened their third venture in June 2017, a Japanese restaurant called Issho, meaning together. Located on level three, it's the jewel in the crown of the 165 million retail development Victoria Gate which was awarded the Best Shopping Centre at the MIPIM Awards 2017 at the Palais des Festivals in Cannes.
DesignLSM have created stunning interiors using traditional oak, marble style tiles, natural-edged porphyry stone and black charred timber, which is traditionally known as 'Shou Sugi Ban' for the rooftop bar, outdoor terrace and a restaurant with a sushi counter.
The timber framed Kori bar is adjacent to the rooftop terrace featuring a beautifully lit monochrome ceiling artwork by Japanese designer Eley Kishimoto, it's perfect for pre and post dinner cocktails, as well as sampling Japanese sake. The outdoor terrace with its panoramic views across the city has comfy low furniture on wood decking with displays of potted trees. A curved walkway illuminated with wine displays leads diners to the restaurant, which has bespoke banquette seating and an open kitchen with a traditional robatayaki grill and sushi counter.
Spearheading the kitchen is Head Chef Weike Zhao, who presents a contemporary Japanese menu designed for sharing using the finest Yorkshire produce. There's an impressive selection of sushi on the menu alongside dishes such as roasted lobster and smoked lime butter or sweet soy glazed duck hearts from the robatayaki grill, finishing with the special dessert of chocolate and matcha pudding.
To accompany the food there's Japanese inspired cocktails, twenty-five different sakes, as well as a comprehensive wine list with options available by the glass.
