Review on Cubé
On the outskirts of Mayfair, off New Bond Street and a short walk from Oxford Circus, Cubé Restaurant and Kakurega Bar opened its doors in August 2017. There's an impressive team behind the enterprise as its run by Mayumi Nunn, who previously worked at Kanada-Ya and Eat Tokyo, former Nobu and Sake no Hana chef Osamu Mizuno is in the kitchen, and Reo Nomura previously of Kouzu and Tokimeite oversees the bar.
Designed by architect Hidetaka Morinaga and designer Yoshi Takagi in an understated fashion with pale wood furnishings, the best seats in the house are by the sushi counter, where you can watch the chefs in action. Downstairs is the Kakurega bar, meaning hideaway where you can enjoy premium Japanese whiskies, fine wines, rare sakes and seven Japanese cocktails including a Mio Bellini, mio, aragoshi-umeshu, peach puree, sugar cane and syrup peach bitters.
The kitchen serves Japanese style tapas and sushi along the lines of scallop with uni butter among the hot section or braised sansho beef from the cold menu. Only available in the evening from the sushi counter, guests can opt for the Omakase course consisting of three kinds of starters, ten pieces of the chef's special nigiri, three pieces of maki sushi rolls and a clear dashi soup with seaweed and somen noodles. To finish expect sweet offerings like fresh fruit with plum wine gelée or a chocolate selection by William Curley.
