Review on StreetXO
Madrid born chef David Muñoz finally launched his much anticipated StreetXO restaurant in November 2016, located on Old Burlington Street in Mayfair. Muñoz with his trademark punk Mohawk hair is known as the enfant terrible of Spanish gastronomy, but before opening his wildly successful three Michelin starred DiverXO in Madrid he graced the London kitchens of Nobu and Hakkasan.
A subterranean den accessed by a golden staircase, the eclectic décor has been created by Barcelona-based designer Lazaro Rosa Violan Muñoz. A sultry lit space done out in a palette of shimmering black and red lacquer, with glossy tables set on dark wood flooring and bar seats with views of the open kitchen. An atmospheric room with edgy graffiti covered walls, exposed piping, neon installations and postmodern artwork, with overhead clusters of bubble chandeliers.
The menu is designed for sharing and like its older sibling reflects European, Asian and American cuisines derived from street food. One of the most popular Madrid dishes that appears on the London menu is their moreish Pekinese dumpling served with crunchy pig's ear, strawberry hoisin, ali-oli and pickles. Elsewhere there's much to enjoy such as hot smoked scallops with creamy citrus ponzu, coconut-kaffir lime reduction and apple blossom or Korean lasagna XO style consisting of aged Galician beef, shitake, Gochujang hot and sour tomato sauce and cardamom béchamel.
To accompany the food there's well-crafted cocktails in the shape of XO Blood! water melon, bitter almonds, citrus and galangal or Liquid Madrizzzzz's DiverXO, violet shrub, lime, ginger and jasmine perfume!
