Review on Duddell's London
Scoring a runaway success with their two-Michelin starred restaurant in Hong Kong, Duddell's have chosen London for their second outpost. Set within the Grade II St. Thomas Church, minutes from The Shard and Borough Market, this historic building can trace its roots back to 1212, and is also home to the Old Operating Theatre Museum.
It has been beautifully designed by Michaelis Boyd, whilst retaining many of the original features of the building such as the wood panelling, the magnificent alter and huge arched windows which flood the room with natural light. Blue banquette seating is set on terrazzo flooring with a green-tiled free-standing bar taking centre stage. There's also a mezzanine level that overlooks the restaurant offering a semi-private dining experience. Like it's sibling Duddell's will be a versatile venue showcasing regularly changing museum quality art exhibitions throughout the year.
Taking helm of the kitchen is Daren Liew, who was previously Executive Sous Chef with the Hakkasan Group and has over 20 years of experience in Cantonese cuisine. Diners can look forward to hand-crafted dim sum in the shape of chicken and glutinous rice in lotus wrap or Imperial king crab and prawn dumpling. When it comes to the a la carte menu there's Duddell's signature Peking duck served with eight different condiments or truffle roasted black cod with lily bulb and Nameko mushroom in Chinese aged vinegar. Desserts are equally enticing affairs, witness Yuzu tart with almond sable, yuzu ice cream and black sesame crisps or crème brûlée with dried tangerine skin, mandarin and ginger bread.
To accompany the menus Duddell's has a wide ranging wine list including some top-end treasures, alongside cocktails with an Asian twist.
