Review on Sorrel Restaurant
Having won a loyal following with his eponymous restaurant in Ripley where acclaimed chef Steve Drake held a Michelin star for 14 years, he has now moved on to ventures new with the launch of his latest restaurant Sorrel. Opened in October 2016, it is set in the charming market town of Dorking surrounded by the beautiful Surrey Hills.
Occupying a Grade II-listed 300-year old building which has been sympathetically renovated, the main dining room is upstairs. Decked out in neutral colours with splashes of blue, it is divided by a network of wooden beams into three spaces, with well-spaced tables smartly dressed in white linen set against plush velvet seating. At the heart of the restaurant is a state-of-the-art stainless steel kitchen with blue tiling and lighting, built in a dramatic glass cube it offers diners tantalising glimpses of the chefs at work.
The kitchen deals in contemporary British dishes with an eye on local produce and seasonality, emphasising culinary intelligence and diversity, together with artistic presentation. Showcasing a monthly changing series of menus that produce a palette of subtle and elegant flavours that cruises it way through starters such as quail, swede, langoustine, tamarind and buckwheat or scallop, apple and curry cannelloni with cucumber ketchup. Main courses move into the realms of monkfish, lardo, di colonnata, leeks, Grellot onions and mushroom milk, while away from the sea you might opt for the Etherley Farm duck, green peppercorns, sherry and black garlic sea beets and trompettes. Desserts are wickedly indulgent creations in the shape of hisbiscus poached pear, cardamom, goat's milk and crystallised gin or a blackberry 'Waldorf' 2018.
Sommelier Sazan Alijija, who previously worked at the two-Michelin-starred Ristorante Uliassi in Senigallia on Italy's Adriatic Coast is on hand to guide you through their extensive wine list. Sorrell is the recipient of three AA Rosettes and a Michelin star.
