Review on Temper City
Hot on the heels of Temper in Soho, Neil Rankin has opened a second outpost in the rejuvenated Angel Court development, just a short stroll from Bank underground station. The cavernous space has been designed like its sibling by architects Gundry and Ducker with the open kitchen taking centre stage, it features a six-metre-long grill, two tandoori ovens and a poultry smoker.
Red leather bar stools next to the marble top counter offer the best view of the chefs in action, otherwise choose one of the cosy booths with banquette seating. An industrial style dining room with warm oak panelling, brass tables are set on grey brick effect tiled flooring. Across the far wall of the restaurant is an impressive floor to ceiling display of bottles of wine. A mezzanine area seating 24 guests is available for private dining and there's also a small courtyard perfect for when the weather is warm.
Where the Soho branch focused on tacos, here it specialises on serving barbecued meats and poultry cooked on the open fire pit alongside curry, tandoor roasted meats and home-made roti breads. Among the list of starters you might find crab beignet or octopus, dahl, chipotle and black vinegar, or for those who prefer meat order the mutton roll. Moving on there's kimchi lamb skewers from the grill or maybe opt for one of their in-house butchered steaks such as rib-eye with kimchi and yogurt. Curry and Thali plates like dry goat come with paratha, temper mix, spiced fried potatoes, turmeric pickles, yoghurt and tamarind sauce, peshwari dust and fresh herbs. If you still have room for something sweet there's a banana-rama-drama dessert with choc-chip ice cream and caramel sauce or chocolate and turmeric torte paired with
with pistachio ice cream.
The food is supported by a carefully chosen wine list, together with a menu of twenty-five different gins, craft beers and cocktails such as New Delhi Sour, bourbon, red wine, cardamom, lemon and egg white.
