Review on Rochelle Canteen at the ICA
Margot Henderson and Melanie Arnold, the founders of the very popular Rochelle Canteen in Shoreditch have opened a second venue, set within John Nash's magnificent Carlton House Terrace, The Institute of Contemporary Arts, which has been wowing the crowds since it moved here in 1968. A modern lofty skylit room with an indoor garden and lovely views overlooking the Mall, it's a pared back space decked out in white with furniture by Alvar Aalto.
Leading the kitchen is the former Shoreditch Rochelle Canteen chef Ben Coombs, who produces a changing seasonal menu of British dishes such as ham hock terrine and piccalilli or fried sprats and tartare sauce amongst the starters. Main courses follow the theme, witness braised rabbit, carrots and Borlotti beans or from the sea roast Brill, lentils and green sauce. Make sure you leave room for one of their delicious desserts like pear, almond and chocolate tart or rhubarb trifle.
Melanie's son Fin Spiteri, formerly of Quo Vadis, Trullo and Flat Iron has curated the cocktails list which focuses on classic drinks, and there's also Peroni beers and coffee from Caravan.
