Review on Caravan Bankside
Miles Kirby, Laura Harper-Hinton and Chris Ammermann, the team behind Caravan in Exmouth Market and King's Cross have added a third string to their bow with the launch of a restaurant south of the river in London's Bankside. Occupying the ground floor of an old metal box factory, it has been sympathetically restored whilst retaining many of the original 19th century features. Steel framed windows flood the cavernous room with plenty of light, an industrial space with lofty ceilings with exposed metal piping and white painted exposed brick walls. The dining area can accommodate 140 guests and the marble topped bar also has counter dining.
A flexible venue providing breakfast, an all day menu of small plates and house-made charcuterie and cheese, pizzas and weekend brunches are all part of its package. Typical offerings on the carte include dishes like pan-fried mackerel, pine nuts, preserved lemon sultanas and capers or from the land Elwy Valley lamb ribs and chermoula. If you fancy something sweet look for ginger cake, hibiscus poached pear, rum syrup and clotted cream or chocolate delice paired with miso ice cream and sesame brittle.
There's a comprehensive wine list, craft beers, cocktails, their signature coffee and house-made kombucha, shrubs and sodas to accompany the food.
