Review on Plot
Gastronome cousins Mark Kimber and Harry Smith have opened their first venture together, located in Tooting Broadway Market, one of South London's oldest markets established in 1936. A casual affair occupying a converted unit, there's just 15 spaces for diners to sit either at the wooden benches or the bar stools next to the marble counter top, where you can watch all the action in the open kitchen.
They have appointed Giles Elstob to take the helm in the kitchen, a chef who has previously plied his trade in Michelin starred restaurants both in the UK and Spain. He presents a seasonal small plates menu championing the very best of British produce, witness trout from Chalk Stream on the River Test, fish from Moxon's at Clapham South, meat is supplied from Chadwick's on Tooting High Street, honey comes from Wandsworth and truffle oil from Wiltshire. On the menu you might see air dried ham rarebit served with Nigella seed toast and pickles or for fish fans there's devilled Cornish crab, Pink fir apple potato and pickled radish. Desserts rack up the comfort factor with a sticky toffee pudding, salted caramel and crème fraiche or a Clementine and almond sponge with Douglas fir custard and Clementine cure.
The global wine list is available by the glass or bottle and there's also wine from two British vineyards Chapel Down Estate in Kent and Nyetimber in West Sussex. Beers and ales are sourced from local breweries such as By The Horns Wolfie Smith Amber IPA from Wandsworth.
