Review on Linden Stores
Following the success of Turkish restaurant Oklava in Shoreditch which opened with acclaimed chef Selin Kiazim, Laura Christie has launched a wine shop, bar and restaurant in Islington with her partner chef Chris Boustead. Previously Laura led the front of house team within the well regarded Salt House Group, while Chris has held positions at Opera Tavern, Ten Bells and James Cochran.
Just five minutes walk from Highbury and Islington tube station in the building that once housed Prawn on the Lawn, it's laid out over two floors with the wine shop upstairs where you can indulge in bar snacks, while the main dining room seating about 15 is downstairs. A pared back space with exposed brick walls and a cosy fire, simple candlelit wood tables are set on tiled flooring, with lighting provided by suspended filament bulbs.
The restaurant takes its name from the road Chris grew up on in Scarborough and his menu takes inspiration from his childhood in Yorkshire. An ever changing menu of modern British small plates is the focus for his dishes, which makes excellent use of the freshest seasonal ingredients. Listed on the blackboard you might see chicken leg, braised carrot puree and pickled walnuts or oxtail pie and bone marrow mash. Other options worth pursuing are the Scottish cockles, ham hock, wild garlic and barley and you must order the moreish smoked and fried spuds with Bovril mayo. For a sweet-toothed finish enjoy rhubarb, cow curd's mousse and crumble or chocolate pavé paired with hazelnut ice cream.
Laura has compiled a carefully chosen wine list that keeps its prices in check and bottles are available to take home for £10 less than the list price.
