Review on 24 The Oval
Set on tree-lined Clapham Road in Kennington, an area not known for its culinary inspirations, 24 The Oval is a refreshingly welcome addition to the dining scene. A relaxed neighbourhood restaurant, the driving force behind this new venture comes from Matt Wells, co-owner of The Dairy, who has teamed up with his business partner from Clapham restaurant Knife, Andrew Bradford.
The full glass frontage floods the room with lots of natural light, where distressed wood tables are decorated with pretty orchids, and the room is lined with lots of greenery. A small outside space offers the opportunity of dining al fresco when the weather obliges.
In the kitchen we find two esteemed chefs, Simon Woodrow who was Head Chef at Wild Honey and Paradise Garage and George East from The Dairy. They send out a menu of small and large plates with a focus on seasonal produce, along the lines of country terrine, sourdough toast, onion and mustard seed chutney or maybe mushroom ravioli, candied malt, sourdough crumb, bone broth. Other promising ideas include roasted cod, Jerusalem artichokes and rainbow chard or from the land, poached chicken breast, crispy wing, toasted bread sauce, gem lettuce and peas. There are lip-smacking desserts to finish, witness treacle tart paired with yoghurt ice cream and honeycomb or poached Yorkshire rhubarb, rhubarb jam, milk ice cream and meringue.
Service is friendly and assured, there's excellent background music, and the concise wine list has options available by the glass, carafe or bottle.
