Review on The Moorcock Inn
Set on a two-acre plot, The Moorcock Inn is a traditional stone-built pub nestling in the South Pennines, high above Sowerby Ridge and overlooking picturesque Norland Moor. It has recently been taken over by chef Alisdair Brooke-Taylor, and Aimee Turford, who have given the place a new lease of life and it's attracting the interest of both foodies and critics alike. Alisadair who originally hailed from Sheffield is an Australian/British chef with A-list credentials, having honed his culinary skills with a two-year residency at Nuno Mendes Viajante, as well as working as sous chef at the Michelin-starred In De Wulf restaurant in Belgium.
A cosy traditional affair with flagstone floors, oak beams, and cosy wood burning stoves to keep you warm in winter, it's in the business of providing genuine hospitality. The Moorcock Inn still serves the local community as a watering hole, as well as offering drinkers a seasonal menu of plates cooked over charcoal, together with house-made charcuterie and aged cheeses. In summer you can eat outside with views of the sunset over the Ryburn Valley, and when it's chilly there's blankets and warming fires.
The restaurant offers a set tasting menu served on crockery Alisdair has made, where he finishes the plates and bowls with a glaze made with ashes from the grill. There's also the option of wine pairing from the excellent wine list curated by Aimee, that focuses on natural wines from small producers. Some of the highlights you might experience include smoked wolf-fish, brassicas or wood-roasted goat, spring greens, mushroom and fermented sloe, finishing with Yorkshire curd tart and birch syrup.
Apart from the innovative cooking and wine list, there's a great selection of Belgian bottles beers, and local beers from brewery Magic Rock and cocktails such as their house-made Negroni where rosehip, hogweed and clementine is mixed with rose petal wine and Yorkshire gin.
