Review on The Coach
The Coach in Clerkenwell, just 10 minutes walk from Farringdon station is the second pub to be opened by James McCulloch of Harcourt Inns and former chef-patron Henry Harris of the highly regarded French restaurant Racine. A neighbourhood pub that has been serving the local generations since 1790, it has undergone a smart renovation, with interiors designed by Liana Goatman to reflect the building's heritage.
The ground floor bar sports oak-panelled walls with stained glass, while floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the bear garden, so called because it was once used for bear baiting, flood the room with natural light. The first-floor dining room has a minimalist approach with high ceilings and walls displaying vintage and contemporary artwork. Leading through the antique glass doors is the elegant Blue Room, a 1920's inspired space available for private dining for up to 10 guests.
Chef Henry Harris has created a tantalising menu, combining his renowned culinary skills with the finest ingredients for dishes such as calf's brain, black butter and capers or smoked salmon, horseradish and soda bread. Main courses are equally as tempting with a grilled rabbit leg, mustard sauce and smoked bacon or from the sea fillet of hake, sea spaghetti, aubergine purée, braised shallots and confit lemon. Proceedings conclude in style with a chocolate and salted caramel pot, crème Chantilly or Muscat grape and raspberry Bakewell tart served with cream.
There's a perfectly curated wine list, together with ales and draught lagers from independent or family-run breweries like Timothy Taylor, Portobello Brewery, Thornbridge and Stiegl, as well as cocktails and sharpeners.
