Review on The Blackbird
Set in the picturesque hamlet of Bagnor, just a few miles west of Newbury in Berkshire, chef Dom Robinson and his wife Marliz have certainly put The Blackbird pub on the culinary map, having receive a plethora of awards within a year of opening, including a prestigious Michelin star. Taking over a run-down-pub that can trace its history back to the 17th century, it has been given a homely vibe with vintage nic nacs and retro pieces, together with roaring open fires, whilst retaining many of the original features. This gem of a rural pub still plays the part of a local watering hole, serving its local community at the bar, although food is now a major attraction.
Dom earned his culinary spurs working alongside esteemed chefs such as Anthony Demetre, Adam Byatt and Tom Aikens, where he held the position of Head Chef for three years at the flagship Chelsea restaurant. The gastronomic emphasis is firmly on local produce from trusted suppliers, showcasing the finest ingredients using classical techniques. Roast and poached Foie Gras, haricot beans and Ventreche Alsace makes an excellent starting point or from the sea you might opt for raviolo of scallop and kennet crayfish with young leeks and rapeseed. The main event brings onboard roast partridge with choux farci, candied fig and sauce Perigeaux or fillet of plaice bonne femme, mash potatoes and chanterelles. Cherry and almond tart served with Disaronno ice cream or a bavarois of malted milk with poached pear, hazelnuts and Frangelico makes for a memorable finish.
Marliz works the front of house with considerable charm and efficiency and the wine list offers plenty of choice by the glass.
