Review on Alchemilla
The hotly anticipated Alchemilla restaurant was launched in the summer of 2017 on the edge of Nottingham city, near Canning Circus. Tucked away on Derby Road it's the brainchild of chef Alex Bond, who has A-list credentials having worked in esteemed restaurants such as Restaurant Sat Bains in Nottingham, Auberge du Lac in Hertfordshire and Turners in Birmingham.
The restaurant is set in a former Victorian coach house, unused for over one hundred years it has undergone a dramatic transformation. A subterranean space, it's flooded with lots of natural light from the massive windows and large skylights set in the curved vaulted ceilings. A shiny brushed aluminium kitchen sits within the exposed brickwork of the original coach house, featuring a large polished concrete Kitchen Table offering guests an interactive dining experience with the chefs. A uniquely designed contemporary restaurant with moss covered and lush living walls, dark wood tables and chairs are well-spaced.
A keen gardener and forager, Alex Bond's modern British plant-based cuisine is earning lots of applause, and it's no surprise he was the recipient of the Chef to Watch in the Good Food Guide 2019. Diners have a choice of either a five, seven or ten course tasting menu with ingredients chosen with real care and commitment. The kitchen sends out dishes on bespoke crockery along the lines of duck liver, enoki and mushroom ketchup, followed by squab pigeon, celeriac, yeast and walnut ketchup, with squab pigeon, celeriac, yeast and walnut ketchup bringing up the rear. Proceedings conclude in style with desserts such as Peruvian marigold, cultured cream and apple, followed by white chocolate, cep and kombu.
To complement the exquisite dishes there's a first-class wine list knowledgeably garnered from vintners in the best growing regions of the world.
